Surveys 101

February 22, 2023 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM (EST)

Description

Love them or hate them, surveys are one of the most economical ways to gather information from a large number of people.

  • Do you find it challenging to phrase survey questions so that they measure what you’d like to know?
  • Are you disappointed by response rates from your client surveys?

Asking questions is part art/part science, and although nonprofit staff does their best to draft easy-to-understand questions, sometimes the information that is generated doesn’t reflect what you really want to know. And participation often falls short of expectations... despite the use of incentives.

What can we learn from others’ successes... and failures?

Two social scientists who design and administer surveys for a living will share tips on best (and worst) survey practices in nonprofit evaluation. In this webinar, participants will learn what to avoid when writing questions; best practices for the timing and method of administration; and what the facilitators have found most effective in increasing response rates while maintaining goodwill with clients. Webinar participants will also learn about online resources, such as question banks and existing questionnaires that, while never ‘perfect,’ may help nonprofit staff refrain from reinventing the wheel.

The hour-long webinar's content is tailored to those with little to no experience in writing survey questions or administering surveys; however, all are welcome. By participating in this event, the facilitators hope you will learn:

  • The advantages and disadvantages of surveying clients
  • What to consider when planning your survey (i.e., who to invite, how to ensure confidentiality, when and how to administer, any costs, and what to include in consent procedures)
  • How best to word questions that are the most likely to produce valid and reliable results
  • Commonly used “Likert scale” response options
  • Methods that have helped boost response rates
  • Online resources for further reading.

Kelly Feighan and Megan Richardson are sociologists at the Research and Evaluation Group at the Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC), which serves clients in all sectors and aims to build healthier communities. The facilitators strive to bring participants together in a friendly, nonjudgmental online environment for candid discussions about best practices.

About the Facilitators

Kelly Feighan, Ph.D., has been measuring program outcomes since the Ice Age, thanks to an early United Way handbook about logic modeling that remains one of the “greats” today. She has provided technical assistance to nonprofits in the area of outcome measurement, evaluated 100+ social service programs, and supported agencies with a wide range of research and evaluative services (i.e., needs assessments, survey design, analysis, and reporting). Kelly earned a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Maryland at College Park and a Ph.D. in the same field from Temple University. She and Megan worked at Research for Better Schools before merging the organization with PHMC’s R&E Group in 2016. Her professional goal in life is to “help people use evaluation for good rather than evil.”

Megan Richardson, MA, is a Senior Project Manager at PHMC who leads evaluations of a wide range of education- and health-related initiatives, such as professional development programs for teachers, interventions designed to strengthen students’ skills, and programs designed to help teach the public healthier habits to reduce the effects of disease. She has designed and administered surveys for many years and frequently cooks up strategies for boosting the highest response rates possible! Ms. Richardson holds a master’s degree in sociology and education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a bachelor’s degree in sociology and urban studies from the University of Pennsylvania.
