Description:

Although nonprofits in the U.S. must increasingly show program outcomes, few have dedicated evaluation staff to consistently collect data, track, and report on outcome performance.

This five-part lunch-time series, pulls back the curtain to work with those who are responsible for outcome measurement and reporting what steps they can take to measure program outcomes. The sessions are designed for nonprofit staff who have some responsibility for measuring and communicating any changes that might result from program delivery.

Topics to be covered include: creating logic models; formulating evaluation questions; examples of survey items; and how to organize, analyze, and present your information.

By participating in this course, participants will:

  • Learn about tools used to measure outcomes
  • Learn a step-by-step model to measure outcomes
  • Be able to identify specific outcomes and figure out how to measure them
  • Gain confidence in their evaluation skills
  • Understand ways to present data

The course, which will provide resources and help participants expand their peer network, aims to improve the quality of their data planning, collecting, analyzing, and reporting.

Thanks to a grant by the Longwood Foundation the five-part series is available to DANA members for $40 for all five sessions.

Kelly Feighan and Megan Richardson from Philadelphia Health Management Corporation (PHMC) bring together nonprofits in a friendly, nonjudgmental environment online for candid discussions about what and how to measure, how to approach data collection and protect service recipients, and how to start developing an evaluative mindset.

About the Facilitators:

Kelly Feighan, PhD, has been measuring program outcomes since the Jurassic Age, when the United Way published one of the first logic modeling handbooks that remains one of the “greats” today. She has provided technical assistance to nonprofits in the area of outcome measurement, evaluated 100+ social service programs, and supported agencies with a wide range of research and evaluative services (i.e., needs assessments, survey design, analysis, and reporting). Kelly earned a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Maryland at College Park and a PhD in the same field from Temple University. She and Megan worked at Research for Better Schools before merging the organization with PHMC’s R&E Group in 2016. Her professional goal in life is to “help people use evaluation for good rather than evil.”

Megan Richardson, MA, is a Senior Project Manager at PHMC with experience leading the evaluations of a variety of education-related programs in the areas of preservice teacher preparation, postsecondary STEM education, and preK-12 education interventions. Ms. Richardson has a master’s degree in sociology and education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in sociology and urban studies from the University of Pennsylvania. She will help course attendees find the humor in evaluation, which, believe it or not, exists!
